Before You Build More

There’s a limit to how much production you can squeeze out of a growing trough, table, or container.

But your greenhouse may still have room to give.

You’re already paying to heat and maintain the growing area, so unused space deserves another look.

Ornamental growers have long hung baskets above aisles, adding production while keeping drainage off the crops below. The strawberry troughs in this photo can be programmed to rise and fall, giving workers access and plants equal exposure to sunlight. Tall vine crops leave fewer options, but shorter crops offer room for creativity.

The added production still needs to justify the equipment, labor, and expense, and more plants don’t automatically mean more profit. But before investing in a bigger greenhouse, look above the benches, along the edges, and at areas you’ve always accepted as empty.

Your next expansion might fit inside the greenhouse you already own.
